Why is it worth visiting the Kłodzko Fortress?
The Kłodzko Fortress isthe largest fortification complex in Polandand one of the best preserved in Europe. It stretches over an area of 30 hectares, and its underground corridors measure over40 km! This is a place where history meets military architecture – a walk through the casemates is a time travel to the 18th century, when Prussia was building an impassable defense line here.

History – From the Middle Ages to today
Origins (13th century)
The first stronghold on the hill was built by the Czechs in 1260. It was a wooden stronghold guarding the crossing over the Nysa Kłodzka River.
Prussian fortress (17th-18th centuries)
After the Silesian Wars (1740-1763), Prussia transformed the castle into a modern bastion-type fortress:
- 1765-1776:Construction of main bastions and casemates.
- 1777-1788:Digging underground corridors (40 km!).
- 1807:Napoleon besieged the fortress for 3 months – to no avail.
