Turquoise, purple and orange rocks – a geological wonder in the heart of the Śnieżnik Massif. The most colorful place in the Sudetes!
Why is it worth visiting Wapiennik?
The Gracious Stone Limestone isthe most colorful rocks in the Sudetes– red, yellow, purple and turquoise! This is a closed quarry where limestone was extracted for 100 years. Today it is a geological open-air museum – a walk among colorful walls, carved chambers and a view of the Śnieżnik Massif. Admission is free, the route is easy (30 minutes), and the photos are a hit on Instagram!
📸 Best Time: Golden Hour
Visit this place during sunset (6:00-7:00 p.m. in summer). The sun’s rays bring out an amazing purple-orange glow from the rocks.
History – Where do these colors come from?
The colors of the rocks are an effectmineral admixturesin calcium from 350 million years ago (when there was a tropical sea here!):
- Red/Pink:Iron oxides (hematite).
- Yellow/Orange:Manganese oxides.
- Purple:Manganese and cobalt compounds.
- Turquoise:Copper compounds (malachite).
What will you see during your walk?
Main Wall
A 30-meter cliff that looks like a big, colorful cake. The geological layers are arranged in stripes.
Cathedral Chamber
A room carved in the rock, measuring 15×10 meters. It has amazing acoustics (the echo lasts 3 seconds!). In the summer, small concerts are held here.
Turquoise Lake
A small pond at the bottom of the excavation. It has an intense turquoise color, but the water is icy (8°C).Note: Bathing is prohibited!
